MAINTANANCE

How do I take care of my straps?

Leather is a natural product and porous material. As such, it is subject to change from one piece to another throughout its life-time and with daily use. This is very normal and expected to occur.  Expect it to evolve with you.

Due to certain tanning processes, some color transfer may occur and this too is normal. Leather is not waterproof, though a splash of water here and there should not hurt it. However, water spotting may occur if exposed to rain/water. All care should be taken to avoid contact with excessive sweat, water, perfumes or dirt to prevent unwanted discoloration and/or damage.

For natural undyed vegetable tanned leather:

If you wish to accelerate the aging and darkening process of this leather, you may want to apply a few light coats of Neatsfoot oil/mink oil/ leather conditioner and let it dry for a few hours. At first, the leather will look much darker and may show streaks from the application, but as the oil dries, the tones will settle and lighten up a bit. To darken it more, you can sit the item in the sun for a few hours.  You’ll notice it start to darken just like skin does. Depending on the time of year and intensity of the sun’s rays, this may take a few hours or a few days to darken. Remember, your leather item will evolve with you and will continue to darken the more you handle it and expose it to the oils of your hands, exposure to indigo and dirt, sun, water, etc. That’s all part of the beauty and appeal of this kind of leather.

For suede leather:

Suede is very delicate. To remove lint, dust and dirt from your strap, use a soft and clean brush/toothbrush and lightly brush over the surface of the strap to remove debris. Do not expose to water, excessive sweat or perfumes as stains from these cannot be removed from suede. Lightly spray with a suede protector to help keep it from getting too dirty.

For vegetable tanned, oil tanned, and others leather:

If you find that your leather item is starting to look dirty you may want to take a mildly damp sponge or clean t-shirt and use a tiny quantity of a product like saddle soap to clean it. Let it dry and remember to apply leather conditioner afterwards to replace the moisture it lost when it was being cleaned. Remember that some conditioners darken leather more than others, so make sure to test in an inconspicuous spot before applying to the entire item. As important as it is to keep leather conditioned, take care in not over conditioning as this weakens the fibers and can also cause mildew to grow. So apply generously but without over-doing it.

What if my strap gets wet?

Leather is not waterproof, though a splash of water here and there should not hurt it. If you plan on getting your strap wet regularly, you can look for straps made by waterproof materials, such as canvas, oil tanned, or other water-resistant materials. Besides, you can also use a leather lotion or oil to maintain the oils of the leather. Be sure to spot test on the back of the strap to see how the lotion will effect the color of the strap. It usually darkens it.

I just received my packages. What should I do now ?

You can either let it be and allow the natural aging process to perform its magic on the leather, or use a leather conditioning product which greatly helps in protecting the leather.

How do I change the strap?

1. For watches with spring bars

Nowadays a lot of watch straps are attached to wrist watches with spring bars/spring pins. Spring bars/pins are small metal bars with ends that are bounced.

The first job to do is to take the spring-bar removal tool, and using the forked end, find the end of the spring bar between the strap and the lug (horn) of the watch. You should now be able to push the end of the bar inwards to remove it from the hole in the lug end. You should now be able to pull the strap away form the watch. Repeat this process for both sides of the watch strap.

Next, thread the spring bars through the ends of your new watch strap. Ensuring the watch strap is the correct way around, and that the piece with the buckle is attached to the 12 O’clock’ position, slot one end of the spring bar into the small holes on the inside of the lug. Using the forked end of the watch strap, press the other end of the spring bar inwards, before releasing it into the small hole on the other lug. To finish, you should check that the spring bars are properly in the holes and that the strap is securely fastened to the watch so that it won’t fall of unexpectedly.

2. For watches with screwed attachments

Some watch straps are attached to watches with screws, such as Panerai. For the most part this is with visible screws on the sides of the watch lugs. For these types of attachments, simple unscrew the screw with a small screwdriver, remove the watch strap, thread the screw through your new strap and secure the screw back in place.

How do I change the buckle?

1. For buckles with spring bars

In order to release the buckle with spring bars from your watch strap, take a spring-bar tool and using the forked end, place it between the buckle and the strap on one side and push the sprung end towards the center. The spring bar, strap and middle part of the buckle will now be separated from the rest of the buckle.

In order to replace the buckle on your new strap, thread the spring bar through the end of the new strap, remembering the middle piece of the buckle! Place one end of the spring bar into one of the holes on the inside of the buckle, ensuring that the buckle is the right way round, and using the forked end of the spring bar tool, press the other end into the other hole in the buckle. Once again, give the buckle a good tug to check it’s firmly secured in place and won’t fall off unexpectedly later.

Please noted, you need to make that sure you buy a watch strap with the correct lug width and buckle size.

2. For buckles with side holes

If you can see holes on the side of your buckle, you can also use the pointed end of your spring-bar tool to remove the spring bar by pushing through the hole from the outside. The spring bar should then release from the buckle and the strap will come away.

Once again, give the buckle a good tug to check it’s firmly secured in place and won’t fall off unexpectedly later

3. For buckles with screw attachments

Some watch straps will have buckles attached to them with screws. This is obvious from the screw ends visible on the sides of the buckle. In order to remove it, use a small screwdriver. This will release the buckle. You will then need to change the buckle and screw the bar in again.

How do I install a NATO?

First, install both spring bars onto the watch lugs. You can do this either with your finger or using the spring bar. Then, pull the long part of the strap out of the floating keeper, so the two layers of the strap are separated.

Now, orient the strap so the keepers and the buckle face up (same direction as the watch face). Begin on the top of the watch (the end of the watch with 12 o’clock). Insert the strap between the spring bar and the watch case, and pull through.

Next, you will do the same thing on the bottom of the watch (the end with 6 o’clock) and pull the long part of the strap back through, this time from the bottom. Again, you will pull the strap in between the watch case and the spring bar.

Last, pull the long part of the watch strap back through the floating keeper. Pull it all the way through, and snug the floating section of the strap up to the watch case. Adjust the watch head on the strap so it is centered between the keepers, and you are all finished.
